Ugly #MixedMedia #ArtJournal #Rhodiarama

I really wasn't in an ugly mood when I drew this, and it doesn't really reflect my feelings at all.  Though I suppose it does say something about my views on human nature.

This was a 'save' in my Rhodiarama soft cover where I had experimented with some Tombow Dual Brush, Fudenosuke and Mono pens.  I didn't have any real idea of what I wanted, other than that I was going to create the negative shape of a woman.

As so often happens, once I was part of the way done, I saw something.  In this case, I was creating the outline of the woman, but the white streaks made me think of a skeleton.  That made me see this woman, and the strange doggerel popped into my head after that.  My brain just works this way.  It was the art that was feeling ugly - not me.  Honest.

I'll be posting a step-by-step challenge for the Zentangle All Around Facebook group using this method on August 2.

I ♡ Cat Fantasy Landscape Step-out #FantasyLandscape #Step-out #DrawingTutorial

This cat's expression changes with even minute differences in the eyes and the shapes so every one you draw will be unique.

Note the similarities between the steps for this cat and those of the sheep in the Use step-out.  It is pretty easy to create many different animals through small alterations in the head shape, ears and eyes.

The possibilities for variations on your cat are endless.  Make the body spiky or add wavy lines for long fur.  Add tiger stripes or spots.  Move the tail or make it thin and wiggly.  It's your fantasy landscape - have fun creating your own cat!

Emulating Eyvind Earle #Watercolor #EyvindEarle #StillmanAndBirn

If you are here for the BD Comics Manga Storypad paper giveaway, (it's great for drawing, tracing and transferring as well as Manga!), you can find it here. Ends tonight!

You are probably familiar with the work of Eyvind Earle, even if you don't recognize his name.  He painted the backgrounds for several Disney films including 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Peter Pan' and 'Lady and the Tramp'.

He painted in oil, thus was able to paint light over dark.  That doesn't work with watercolor.  His simple sweeps of color are hard for me - I like to fuss.  So I wasn't quite sure how I wanted to handle either of those things.  I also wanted to keep some of my own style.  Ah well.  Thinking things out is not my forte.  I do much better by just doing, making my mistakes and learning from them.

So  here's my first attempt.  I used three different techniques for the little flowery patterns in the trees so I could compare.  I used masking fluid, lifting paint, and using a white acrylic marker after the paint dried.

The acrylic marker came closest, but I'll need to buy more colors if I'm going to continue with that method.  I like the way the masking fluid allows the color underneath to show, but I need to figure out how to get much smaller petals.  Lifting didn't work well at all.  That didn't surprise me - but it might work if I want a foggy look around the bottom of the trees.

I couldn't decide how I wanted to handle the shadows in the meadow and just ended up over-working the paint.  It's a process though, and I'm happy enough with the piece because I learned quite a bit.

This style goes well with my fantasy landscape theme, and I got the idea for some step-outs, too.

Ecosystems in Urban Greenways #Zentangle #PenAndInk #ZentangleInspiredArt

If you are here for the BD Comics Manga Storypad paper giveaway, (it's great for drawing, tracing and transferring as well as Manga!), you can find it here.

I'd like to say I observed a beautiful urban greenway and was inspired to draw this work, but...nah.

I was just waiting to get my hair cut and this was what happened.  It did remind me of the some of the beautiful greenway paths around Portland, Oregon, though.
