Review of Tim Holtz Papillon Stamp Set

A couple of weeks ago, I won a stamp set from Simon Says Stamp.  A marvelous stamp set.  A beautiful stamp set.  It has butterflies.  Really beautiful butterflies, and marvelous background stamps with the names of cities and words pertaining to butterflies.  Don't take my word for it--look at that beautiful set!  I've been stamping with joy since I received it!

The set is made of pink rubber with a foam backing, and the cut is deep, intricate and clean.  No more than you would expect from Tim Holtz!

They're large stamps (I've provided a picture of the set stamped on an 8x11 in sheet of paper to give an idea of size).  Large stamps can be a challenge.  It isn't always easy to determine how much pressure, or if you've applied pressure to the whole stamp.  I've been practising.  I don't always worry about a perfect image, since my style is pretty rough anyway.  But I want a perfect image when I want one, lol!

For the first bleedthrumanade I did with the sta…

Mis?Adventures in Watercolor-An Experiment on an Experiment on an Experiment

Yay!  Finally, I did something I like!  But the painting was a process of liking it then messing it up.  Then trying something and liking it, but then messing it up and...well, finally I quit while I was ahead, lol! This started as an experiment with Daniel Smith Watercolor ground.  I painted a page in my moleskine with the ground to see if i would turn a sketchbook page into a watercolor page.  I did two coats of ground with a day between, and then left it for a week to be sure it was cured. The texture was rough, but the paint sort of slid around on the ground.  I  started a Linda Kemp style negative painting.  Initially, I like the textured look I was getting, but by the time I finished covering the page using a dry on wet technique, I hated it.  I set it aside until I decided what I wanted to do. Over the last week or so, I've picked the moleskine up and looked at the piece, but inspiration did not strike. Then last night, I decided to see how my Letraset Aqua Markers would do on…

Bleedthrumanade with Blue Pearls in Rubber Cement

Got lemons, make lemonade.  Got marker bleedthru, make bleedthrumanade.
Ingredients: Letraset Promarkers, Micron Pigma & Graphic, Pentel Sunburst Gel Pen, Rhodia 'R' Pad,

I stamped at random before I even layed down color, thinking I might get some interesting bubble transparency effects.  I don't think I did.  Don't think I'll do this again, lol.

The stamp ink bled through (it doesn't if you use the Promarkers first) and between that and the strong design I'd colored on the front, I had a hard time coming up with anything really different for the back.

Bleedthrumanade with Onion and Acorn

Blah, blah, blah, lol!  That's the weather, and whenever it turns that way, that's me.  I still haven't been able to find an art project that sparks a light for me. But I'll get over it.  Either the weather will change or I'll get used to the gray and gloom again.  That's Portland most of the time, after all!

Ninja Puppy-the story continues!

Got Lemons, make Lemonade.  Got marker bleedthru, make bleedthrumanade.  Ingredients: Daycraft Cookie Bookie notebook, Zentangle, Pentel sunburst gel pen, Micron pigma.

On Wednesday, I posted about Miss Muffet Puppy, who was frightened by a puppy.  The ink from the Gigi Love puppy stamp that I used bled thru the paper, but not so much the Promarkers.  I had to think this meant something.  Obviously Miss Muppet Puppy's story wasn't over.  I thought of how I might react in this situation and the story was decided. Lol!

the story continues....

Unable to forget her trauma, Miss Muffet Puppy dons her Ninja outfit and ventures into the night, searching for the spider that frightened her...with revenge on her mind!  *cue in dramatic horror music*

Review of Suzanne McNeil's 'Zentangle® 5'

Review of Zentangle® 5 by Suzanne McNeil.

About the Book
If you have seen any of Suzanne McNeil's Zentangle® books 1 thru 4, then this one will come as no surprise. It has the same format, the same image-heavy, clear, concise instructions, and the nifty tangle index in the back. The focus for this book is zentangle-inspired jewelry, but with 40 new tangle patterns, there is much for everyone, whether you are into jewelry or not.  The tangles bear the hallmark of Suzanne's style, being simple enough for beginners but varied and textured enough for the experienced.

Size: 8.5 x 11
Pages: 20 pages, including covers
Portability: Too large for most purses, but it would fit into a PeeChee folder or briefcase.

What's in the book: Leather Jewelry; Domino Jewelry; Classic Zentangle®-How to get Started; Artist Trading Cards; Glass Gems; Tiles, Color Inks & Colored Paper; Polymer Clay & Resin Jewelry; Resin Jewelry; Mardi-Gras Ladies; Shrink Art Jewelry; Polymer Clay Jewe…

Tutorial video showing how to create a paper haunted house with glowing windows.

I'm not even sure what this is or where it came from, lol

I'm in one of those strange moods.  Not really depressed but kind of edgy.  Where I instantly hate every artistic endeavor that I start, and even though it's bright and sunny and so very hot, it feels like it should be rainy and gloomy.

So I thought I'd try something easy.  I pulled out my itty bitty Unity stamp, Gigi Love, and my Inkadinkadoo Spider & EEK! stamp, and from there this mutant picture was born.

Feeling sure it had magical powers, I decided to prove you can get a blue sky from a blue Promarker, even if you are coloring in an orange papered Cookie Bookie notebook.  And really, if you squint, really, really hard you can see the blue...okay...bluish-gray haze then.  Okay, okay.  White gel pen over mud then.  But honestly it does look exactly like a Portland Oregon sky on a gloomy day.

Ah well.  Cheer me up and follow this link to enter my giveaway, if you haven't already!

Review of Zen Mandalas by Suzanne McNeil

Zen Mandalas by Suzanne McNeil

Size: 8.5" x 8.5" (21.6 x 21.6 cm )
Pages: 52 (including covers)
Portability: Easily carried, but too big for most purses and a little thick for folders.

I'll make a confession.  I'm not a mandala person.  Oh, I don't dislike them.  They're pretty, but I have no desire to create them myself.  So when I saw this title I hesitated, wondering whether I would be interested in the book.

Well, I found the 60 new tangles included in this book worth the price, alone.  I still don't want to draw mandalas, but I couldn't help but admire the beauty of the mandalas done by Suzanne and CZTs Margaret Bremner and Carole Ohl.

The book covers several ways of creating zen mandalas, the symbolism of mandalas and various kinds of mandalas, which I did find interesting.  If you ARE a mandala person, this might well be your favorite of Suzanne's zentangle books.

I've been crafty this weekend

I've been having fun this weekend, with the swag that I've won or bought on clearance.  I've used the beautiful Tim Holtz Papillon stamp set (thank you Simon Says Stamp, where there are lots of giveaways, and you can buy Letraset and many other fantastic art and crafting goodies!) for a card (and a bleedthrumanade  I haven't finished yet), and a wall-hanger that I won from Wiccababe (Thank you Debbi!).  I used the Wizard of Oz papers I bought to cover that.  I'm not sure how well you can see from the photo, but I followed this tutorial from Kami at No Biggie to get a spooky mirror effect.

I managed to get a really nice stamped image of my butterflies, and then I blew it when I used the Smooch Spritz spray to glitter it up.  The glittery effect is nice, but it's hard to control the spray.  Since I messed up the image, I added some Smooch Accent Ink to make the butterflies look brighter.  I couldn't get the glittery effect to show in the photos (naturally *si…

More Letraset Aqua Markers & Linda Kemp style art

I decided to branch out with my Aqua Markers and try something of my own using what I learned from the Linda Kemp exercise.  I don't think I managed to quite stay true, but I got what I was going for.  I used Pumpkin shapes--not just the whole pumpkin but the sections of pumpkin, painting the grooves in between to block out the shapes, rather than just painting the shapes.

My fern painting was done on a Fluid Watercolor block and this one was done on a Strathmore Watercolor pad.  It was easier to get the wash effect going on the Fluid paper, but it also tended to pill a bit if I scrubbed much at all.  With the Strathmore, I had to scrub to get the wash, but didn't have to worry about overdoing as much.  The point being that it isn't just the paint medium that counts.  You'll have a different experience with different paper.

Either way, I'm happy with the result.  Although--it turns out that Pumpkin shapes are similar to banana bunches.  This painting could be eithe…

Review of Letraset Aqua Markers

When I started using Letraset Markers I also read about Letraset Aqua Markers.  I was confused at first, but discovered that Promarkers were an alcohol marker, while the Aqua Markers were essentially watercolor.  I've never been that happy with other water-soluble mediums, so I decided to pass, and just concentrate on the alcohol version, which I love.
Then last week, I ordered a Promarker Blending Set II, but Aqua Markers were delivered instead.

Well, I'm a big believer in the universe and its desire to send messages, so I decided to give the Aqua Markers a try.

Problems that I've encountered with other water-soluble markers, pens and colored pencils were weak color, hard lines that couldn't be eliminated, and the inability to spread the color into a wash--the very hallmark of watercolor.  So I decided to see how the Aqua Markers handled these things.

I had just picked up a copy of Linda Kemp's Watercolor Painting Outside the Lines, and I decided to try using the …

Warning! Craft Warehouse-Clearance Sale...need I say more?

I didn't win this--I bought it!

I walked into Craft Warehouse looking for a 12-color set of Koi Watercolor that I intend to give as a gift.  There weren't any, but then I saw the word 'CLEARANCE'.

There is no siren song sweeter, and I floated toward the sign, snared and helpless.

There were Studio G stamps for 10 cents apiece!  10 cents!  There were Unity Stamps (big 'uns 4, 5 inches) for $3 & $5. There were stamps for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Valentines, and St. Patrick's Day.  There were birdcages, flowers, sayings, seasons, greetings...oh my golly goodness.  I wasn't sure I would ever get through them all.  For a while, I had the feeling I was trapped, and wasn't sure I'd ever escape until I looked at every one.

They had scrapbook paper, both new and slightly used.  I picked up an awesome pad with a Wizard of OZ theme.

Besides the new stuff on clearance, the store was getting rid of product they had used for projects.  Smooch Spritz an…
