Mini-review of J. Herbin's Lierre Sauvage Fountain Pen Ink #JHerbin #Exaclair #Zentangle

Image
Earlier this week, I briefly reviewed J. Herbin's Vert Olive, and today I'm doing the same for Lierre Sauvage (Wild Ivy).

For some reason, I always hesitate to use green, and then when I do, I always wonder why I don't use it more often.  I find myself drawn more to the olives than to the 'grass' greens, but nonetheless, I like Lierre Sauvage.

I didn't notice any shading on either the Roadbook or the GraF it dot grid paper.  Since I'm left-handed, I decided to try using my right hand for the second writing example, just to see if holding the nib at a different angle would make a difference.  I didn't seem to.  I'm more heavy-handed with that hand, so the writing was darker over all, but still no shading.  I do know that other's have had shading with this ink (hence my experiment), so it was either the weather or my pen that made a difference.
This ink is very readable.  Where Vert Olive would be too light for extensive writing, Lierre Sauvage is …

Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-09 #Exaclair #Schut #Watercolor

Image
Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Watercolor Paper, Medium Fine Grain/Cold-Pressed, 250 gm2/115 lbs

Acid-free, ph-Neutral. As you may have noticed, Schut has a variety of watercolor papers.  This particular variety has no name beyond 'Schut Watercolor Paper' and the pad/block cover doesn't give information on its composition.  I wasn't able to find further information that was in English, so I'm not sure if the paper is cotton, cellulose or something else.  It is stiff, more like Schut's Terschelling than their Noblesse, so I suspect cellulose.

Although the cover labels the paper medium fine grain, I found it rougher than most cold-pressed but not as rough as most papers labeled 'rough'.  Rough grain paper can be difficult to work with but satisfying once you get the hang of it.  This might be a good paper…

Mini-review of J. Herbin's Vert Olive Fountain Pen Ink #JHerbin #Exaclair #Zentangle

Image
I decided I didn't have enough GREEN in my mess of fountain pen inks so I bought some of J. Herbin's Vert Olive, and Lierre Sauvage (to be reviewed later this week).

Since I hadn't tried it before, I bought a 10 ml bottle, but it also comes in a 30 ml, which I'll buy next time.  It also come in cartridges designed for the J. Herbin roller ball pen.

Vert Olive is a light color, but it shades nicely.  The scan of the writing example below came out a bit yellower than the true color, but it show the shading very well.  This writing example above was written in a Clairefontaine Roadbook and the on below was done on Clairefontaine GraF it dot grid paper.  The shading occurred more readily on the GraF it, so paper may make a big difference.

The drawing below was drawn and colored using only Vert Olive.  The range of color comes from lightness of touch, plus the ink darkens quickly when you layer over previously applied color.
The weather here has been windy, and I've no…

When you see the GraF it, your first thought might be, "Hmmm. Another sketchpad."  The pale color and unassuming drawing on the cover aren't flashy.  But then you notice those huge staples.

And, although the cover front and back is a light, but stiff cardboard, you realize there is also a heavier cardboard, to provide a sturdy backing.

There are three creases in the front…

The Door to Watercolor #Watercolor

Image
As with yesterday's watercolor painting, this is an exercise from a library book, that I did a few months ago.  I forgot to write down the title or author, but I think it was 'Watercolor for the Fun of It: Getting Started' by John Lovett.

The book had some definite printing errors--pages where the paragraphs started in the middle of a sentence, but the exercises themselves were good, and you could usually figure out what you needed to do.

This was done on a watercolor postcard.

Painting the House -- Somebody's House #Watercolor

Image
This is exercise I did from a watercolor tutorial in a book I took out of the library a few months back.  I feel bad, because I can't remember what book it was or the author.  I think it might have been 'Watercolor for the Fun of It: Getting Started' by John Lovett, but I'm not sure.

It was a good tutorial though!

Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-08 #Exaclair #Schut #Zentangle

Image
Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Artist Drawing Paper, Light Grain, Extra White,180 gm2/83 lbs

PH Neutral, Acid-free, for pen, pencil, charcoal, crayon & pastel.

For this example I used a Pentel Color Brush in Black with a Fabrico™ Dual Tip Fabric Marker - Light Gray, for shading, on the first drawing and a Pigma Micron .01 & .005 tips for the second drawing.

The paper has a fairly smooth surface, but you can feel a slight tooth.

The outcome of my tests:

Both brush-tip & fabric-tip friendly--no bleed-through no show-throughno  featheringthe paper texture--gave crisp linesink dried quicklyink flowed easilydidn't seem to fray fabric tips Earlier, in this series I reviewed the 225 gm2/152 lb version of the Schut Artist Drawing Paper, using other mediums.

Journal52 Prompt - Week 42: Magic #Journal52 #ArtJournal #Gellyroll

Image
Well, I did what I always tell myself not to do.

It had been a while since I did a page of words in my Journal52 journal.  My brain didn't immediately pop up with ideas for the prompt 'Magic', and I wasn't feeling all that creative, so Words it was.

But, I hated the page I came up with.  I know--I try not to judge, but I just didn't like it.  I did like what I was doing on a page of Clearprint Vellum, though, so I decided to paste it over my first try and continue with it.  I scanned in the first page, though, and this morning, I wish I hadn't glued over it.

I still don't like it, but I don't hate it the way I did last night.

Ah well.  I like the backgrounds on both, so I wrote up the process for them after the photos. Once the backgrounds were done, it was just a process of using Sakura Gellyrolls pens to write the words and color around them (And I colored the horses on the vellum page).

I was using up some watercolor paint off my palette, and then I used the background it provided for this piece done with a black Pentel Colorbrush and Sakura Gellyrolls for added color and highlights.

Neither scan nor photo got the colors right--that's the bad thing about shiny gel pen ink. But even the watercolor background came out more yellow and washed out. *sigh*

Journal52-Prompt 41: Mosaic Inspired #Journal52 #ArtJournal #ArtJournaling

Image
When I saw the prompt 'Mosaic Inspired', my first thought was to go through my old drawings and paintings, find one that was so-so, cut it up and then glue the pieces down into a mosaic.

About a second later, my second thought was 'Nah!'

So I just drew this with a Pigma Micron and then colored it in with Gellyroll pens.

Note: If you want to skip the philosophical stuff and just see how I made this page, skip until you're past the photo down below.

I've had problems with my internet lately, and, at first, I thought "oh well.  Extra time for arts and crafting!"  However, it's that time of year.

The days are getting shorter.  And grayer.  And wet.  My sleep patterns are disrupted.  I'm dreading the end of daylight savings because I know it will be worse.  And as often happens during this season my creative energies have wandered off.  I must push myself to create, and I'm seldom happy with what I come up with.

Sound familiar?  I think it happens to many, if not all of us.  And knowing it's coming, recognizing it and finding ways to deal with the seasonal funk is something we all need to do.

I'll give myself 2 or 3 days off, but then I create whether I want to or not.  Put simply, I find it's the best way to get out of the funk.  I do lots of practice work and q…

Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-07 #Exaclair #Schut #Watercolor

Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Serene Watercolor Paper, Medium Fine Grain/Cold-Pressed, 200 gm2/95 lbs

Acid-free, Cellulose.

The outcome of my tests:

Washes move well.Pencil marks wash into paint without smearing.Paint only lifts so-so.  It is easy to cause damage that will show if area is painted over. Both masking tape and liquid frisket remove easily.I didn't have problem with backruns..Scraping works without excess fuzz or pills.  You can gently fold the paper over until the edges meet.  The paper 'remembers' the fold, but will straighten completely if weighted down. You can fold the paper, without creasing, until edges touch and it springs back without memory.  It creases cleanly without radiating or cracking. There was no dimpling, buckling or curling.

Still-Life with Melon #Watercolor #KDAllegri #Shizen

Image
This is a painting I did in my first watercolor with Kathy Delumpa Allegri.  I'm not sure why I haven't posted it before now, lol.

On the last day of class we have a potluck.  I brought in ... wait for it .... melons!  I put out half for everyone to eat, and set up the rest as a still life.  The painting was done on Shizen paper, a rough hand-made paper from India, that I really like working on!
