Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-14 #Exaclair #Schut #Watercolor

Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Aquarel Elegance, Medium Fine Grain/Cold-Pressed, 300 gm2/140 lbs

100% Cellulose, acid-free.

During these tests, I'm often overdoing to see what happens.  In this case, with my second painting, I overdid the lifting of color, repainting and relifting in fairly rapid succession.  While the color lifted easily, I quickly came to the point where the painting was overworked.  I wasn't surprised--lifting this way does damage the paper.  I felt the results were about what I'd expect from a paper of this weight and texture.  No surprises.

But I did want to save the work, so I used gel ink pens over the dried watercolor paint, squirkling and smearing it in places.  I used Moonlight Gellyrolls, which are made for working over dark colors, but they don't scan or photo well, so my finished piece looks better in real life, than it does here.

The outcome of my tests:
  • Paper folds well for its weight with some memory of the fold
  • When creased it does get multiple creases, but they don't radiate outward
  • Frisket and/or tape can cause slight damage
  • Color lifts well
  • Washes move well
  • Paper tends to come off in chunks when you scrape it

'Bearded Irises' was adapted from an online exercise posted at the Painted Prism.

The Gel Ink colors are darker and more blended in real life than they appear in this scan.

Overgrown #Qor #Watercolors #Zentangle #Brushpen

Another attempt to use up paint left on the palette.  Qor watercolors are so intense that I always think I'll need more than I do, and I end with lots leftover.  Good thing too, because then I get to do stuff like this, lol.

I was also playing around with loading up my paint brush with two or three colors at once, and then laying down variegated strokes of color.

After the watercolor dried, I used a Pentel Pigment Ink Brush pen to do the linework.

Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-13 #Exaclair #Schut #Watercolor #Zentangle

Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Sketchpad Paper, medium fine grain, 180 gm2/83 lbs

PH Neutral, Acid-free, ISO 9706.

I was impressed with how well this sketchpaper held up as a watercolor paper, given its weight.

The outcome of my tests:

  • The Paper:
    • can be folded almost edge to edge without crease or cracking, and it retains little memory of the fold
    • seems heavier than 180 gm2/83 lbs
    • fairly stiff--warbles brightly when you flap the paper
    • has enough tooth to feel slightly gritty to the touch
  • Watercolor:
    • washes move well
    • pencil lines don't soften into paint
    • color lifts well
    • hard lines form easily
    • no buckling
    • no curling
    • very slight dimpling along edges only
    • takes scraping well
  • Fountain Pen friendly--
    • no bleed-through
    • no  feathering
    • no indentation from nib pressure.
    • Show-through only if held up to light.

    Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-12 #Exaclair #Schut #Watercolor

Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Serene Aquarelbloc Paper, Medium Fine Grain/Cold-Pressed, 300 gm2/140 lbs

    100% Cellulose, acid-free, ph-Neutral.

Although the cover said 300 gm2/140 lbs, the paper seems much heavier, more like a 300 lb.  You can see the texture in the photo below.  It is almost rough, but the paint was easier to control than it is with many rough papers. You do easily get a granulated look of sorts, but the indents are wider, leaving more white than you normally get with *granulation.  It is something that will appeal to some, but not to others.

    The outcome of my tests:
    • The tooth of the paper is rougher than most cold-press.
    • The paper is heavy for a 140 lb paper
    • Paint lifts, but some granulation may remain.
    • Very little rippling occurred, even with very wet washes.
    • No dimpling at all.
    • Doesn't scrape well.  It's hard to get started, and tends to come away in chunks
    • You can gently fold the paper over until the edges meet.  The paper 'remembers' the fold, but will straighten completely if weighted down.
    • Creases well for it's weight, with only tiny radiations..
    • Because of the faux granulation, lifting color can be difficult. However, it does take scrubbing fairly well.
    • The painting seemed to become overworked very quickly, especially when color was lifted.
    • Washes move well.
    • backruns are not a problem.
    • Both liquid frisket and tape lift well.
    • Pencil marks fade into paint.
*Granulation--the speckled effect you get when watercolor pigments separate by weight.  The heavier pigments settle into the indentations, the 'tooth' of the paper leaving darker spots. Some people love granulation and some people hate it.

Both of these paintings were adapted from exercises in Zoltan Szabo's
    '70 Favorite Watercolor Techniques'.

More Music to Inspire Artists, Writers and Lovers W/ Craig Bidondo and Tim Gilson #Inspire #Taborspace

Earlier this week I posted about the wonderful musical performance I attended on Saturday night, where we were invited to make art while the musicians played.

This is a drawing I started that night, but wasn't able to finish before the performance was over.  Truly a fantastic night!

    Watercolor Wednesday with Schut-10 #Exaclair #Schut #Watercolor #Zentangle

Each Wednesday for 22 weeks, I'll be sharing artwork that was done on paper from a Schut Papier sampler.  I'll be giving you a little information about each of the papers.

Schut Papier Salland Printmaking Paper, Warm White, 50% cotton,50% cellulose,300 gm2/140 lbs

PH Neutral, Acid-free, chlorine-free.  Good for printmaking--copperplate, etching, silk screen printing and lithography, but also good for watercolor and drawing.

I don't do much in the way of printmaking, so I decided to try fountain pen and watercolor for my tests.

The paper has a fairly smooth surface, more like a hot pressed paper than a cold pressed. The tooth feels somewhat gritty to the touch.  Although the weight is 140 lb, it felt more like a 200 lb to me, due to the stiffness of the paper.

    The outcome of my tests:

    • The Paper:
      • can be folded almost edge to edge with crease or cracking, but does retain curve
      • when creased, gets slight radiating lines (not bad for a paper this stiff and heavy)
    • Fountain Pen friendly--
      • no bleed-through
      • no show-through
      • no  feathering
      • colors are bright
      • lines were very crisp
      • ink dried quickly
      • ink flowed easily
    • Watercolor:
      • washes move well
      • pencil lines don't soften into paint
      • hard lines form easily
      • colors are bright

      Journal52 Prompt Week 43: Stencil It!! #Journal52 #ArtJournal #ArtJournaling

This weeks prompt called for Stenciling!

      Supplies:
      Rubbing Alcohol & dropper
Distress Ink pads :Picked Raspberry, Salty Ocean, Mowed Lawn
      TCW 6x6 Stencil-Mini Cell Theory
Dragonfly stencil (sorry.  Not sure who makes the one I have)
      Dreamweaver Metallic Gold Embossing Paste
Daler-Rowney Graduate Metallic Green Acrylic Paint
      Classic white Gellyroll pen
      Pigma Sakura pen, black .05
      Paint brush
      Palette knife

Step 1: Drag the ink pad across part the page, leaving lots of white space.  Repeat with the other two color ink pads, blending colors in some areas, until the page is covered.

      2. Suck up some of the rubbing alcohol into the dropper, and drip across page at random.  Let dry.

      3. Drop some more alcohol into some of the drops from last steps, so that you get a wider variety of  colors.

      4. Place the Mini-Cell Theory stencil on the page and tape down.

      5.  Brush metallic green paint over entire stencil.  This is a very transparent paint so in some lights you barely see it, but in others the dots jump out at you.  Let the paint dry.

      6. Tape down the dragonfly stencil where you want it on the page.

      7.  Scoop embossing paste out of the jar with the palette knife and spread it evenly across the stencil.  I decided I didn't want the lines or vine embellishment, and only covered the dragonfly section.

      8. Carefully life the stencil straight up.  Remove any rough edges by lightly smoothing with the palette knife.

      9.  Cut X's into the dragonfly's body if you want more texture.  Let dry.

      10.  Write out your saying with the white Gellyroll pen.  Let dry for 1/2 hour or so and write over with pen again to darken.  Let dry overnight.

      11. Outline words with Micron pen.  Do try to wait 1/2 a day or more or you might ruin your Micron.

Music to Inspire Artists, Writers and Lovers W/ Craig Bidondo and Tim Gilson #Inspire #Taborspace

I had a wonderful time on Saturday night.  I attended a concert performance in piano and bass at Taborspace, a coffee shop located inside a church.  The fun part was that the audience was part of the performance.  And to top it off, the proceeds went to local charity.

You were encouraged to bring sketch pad, pencils, colors, journal or clay and write or draw as the music inspired you.  Or to dance or just to listen if that was your preference.  For the 1st half of evening, Craig Bidondo and Tim Gilson played a medley of tunes for us and we all created art.

The music was a fusion of mellow jazz and other styles with songs from various genres.  I recognized many of them, though 'Hurt' by Nine Inch Nails (later, covered by Johnny Cash) was the only one I could name. Craig and Tim made it all their own.

During the break, the two musicians walked among the audience and chose some of their works for the second half.  They, then improvised music based off of the artwork.  They improvised from a pen and ink line drawing, a couple of paintings, a couple of poems, a collaborative story, and even had one of the audience improvise vocals to their music.

My pen and ink drawing was one of the pieces chosen, and I felt a bit as though I had cheated.  I chose to bring my Pentel Pigment Ink brush pen.  You can control the thickness of line simply by the amount of pressure you put on the brush, and every stroke is so-o-o elegant.  It was the perfect tool to just make marks according to the rhythm of the music.  It was a fantastic experience to hear the music that it inspired.

If you are interested in getting a taste of Inspire! music, and the evening, you can watch six minutes of previous performance-Music to Inspire Artists, Writers and Lovers W/ Craig Bidondo and Tim Gilson.  Even better, if you live in the Portland, Oregon area, look for their next concert sometime in February.  Craig and Tim have an Inspire! Facebook page and Taborspace has a newsletter if you want to learn of upcoming activities.

Unfortunately, I forgot to grab my drawing back before I left so I can't scan it in for you, but these are two other pieces that I did during the course of the evening..
