Giveaway Closed - Black tile Zentangle® Tool Set, Pigma Microns & Pen Pouch #SakuraOfAmerica #Zentangle #Giveaway

Image
Recently, Sakura of America asked to share some of my artwork, and as a thank you for doing so,
sent me a package of art supply goodies.  As usual in these cases, I like to share the wealth, and I am giving away three of the items:

-a black tile Zentangle® tool set
-a set of 6 Pigma Micron pens in assorted colors, size .05
-a Sakura pen pouch

This giveaway is (now closed) international.

Usually I review the items I giveaway, but in this case, I don't have extras that I can use for review purposes.  I will be reviewing the Renaissance Zentangle later this week.  It is similar but not exactly the same, though.

The set consists of 2 white Gelly Roll® pens, 1 white pencil, a tortillon (paper stump for smoothing pencil lines), 1 black Pigma Micron pen .05, and 5 black Zentangle tiles (tiles are paper).  This set will be handy for anyone who likes drawing on black paper - whether a Zentangle enthusiast or not.

The Pigma Micron set consists of one of each color: black, blue, green red, purp…

While waiting for a new prompt for '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds' I decided to choose birds of my own, so that I didn't lose my momentum.

I knew this woodcock was going to be a challenge.  I combined two different photos (both from the Morguefile archive).  And there are so many bars on the feathers and so many layers of feathers!

But hey! What's fun is it  always choosing something you feel comfortable with?  I'm not entirely happy with my finished bird, but I did better than I thought I would.  Hopefully after 52 weeks of bird painting, I'll be able to retry this with more success.  That's the whole point of doing the 52 weeks.

Besides the challenge, I also chose this bird because I was able to use the same colors that I mixed for the squirrel I painted earlier this week.  The palette is one based off of the palette that'Domenic DiStefano used in Painting Dynamic Watercolors'.  The paints I used for my mixes  were M. Graham: Anthraquinone Blue; Da…

Robin - Week 6 of '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds' #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds #ArtJournal

I was trying really hard to stay loose with this painting, but as usual I couldn't resist playing around with it, mostly because I didn't like the tree limb.  I think I got the effect of a photo where the camera isn't held perfectly still, lol.

That said, I'm not unhappy.  I was combining reference photos again, which means I have 'see' how things go together, in my head.  I give myself a bit more leeway in these cases, considering it practice and waiting patiently for practice to make nearer to perfect.

The biggest disappointment? After I painted this, I realized I was holding my journal upside-down.  *sigh*  I swear I have at least one upside-down piece in every single journal I've done.

Once again I used the palette based off of the palette that'Domenic DiStefano used in Painting Dynamic Watercolors', adding Qor Quinacridone Gold to the mix.  This has proved to be a nice palette for animal and nature paintings. The other paints used for my mixes …

Lilac Breasted Roller #Watercolor #WatercolorBirds #ArtJournal

Image
Mitsib was a couple of weeks late posting prompts 6 or 7 for '52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds'. She has since posted her choices, but I didn't want to lose my momentum, and decided to paint birds of my own choosing, meanwhile.

I chose the Lilac-Breasted Roller because I love the Lilacs and Blues.

I only used one brush - a Da Vinci Cosmotop Spin 5880 Size 10 and I used a Tom Lynch Juice color palette of Holbein's Opera, Peacock Blue, Permanent Green No 1 and Permanent Yellow Lemon. I think these colors have been renamed and/or obsoleted.  I picked up all four colors for like $3 on clearance.  They're very nice colors but not very light-fast.

I'm did this bird in the Global Art Materials Field Watercolor Artist Journal Hand Book, 7 by 10-Inch that I'm using for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds'.

I found my reference photo at the Morguefile archive.

Ooh! Ooh! I Got Fabulous Mail from Sakura of America @SakuraOfAmerica #PigmaMicron #Zentangle

Image
I just received a package of goodies from Sakura of America.

Now my first reaction when I get one of these packages is to think, "MINE! All Mine!"

That's a bad thing for the soul, so I always give something away.  I've wanted to do an international giveaway for a while now, and so I'm going to give away two of the items from this haul.

Haven't decided which two yet, though.  I'll be doing reviews on the rest of it.

Be sure to check back at my blog in a week or so.

My husband has been bugging me to paint him another critter, so I looked at photos on the Morguefile, and found a cutie to use as reference.

Colors used were M. Graham: Anthraquinone Blue; Daniel Smith: Hansa Yellow Light; Qor: French Cerulean Blue, Naples Yellow, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Permanent Alizarin Crimson.  The idea for this palette came from a book called 'Painting Dynamic Watercolors' by Domenic DiStefano, though I substituted a couple of different colors.  None of the colors were used straight from the tube, but instead I made various mixes (the scan is a little too yellow on my screen).

The Brushes I used were Da Vinci Cosmotop Mix B 5530 - size 4 for the squirrel and Da Vinci Cosmotop Spin 5880 Size 10, (I've provided Amazon links so you can see what these brushes look like, but note that if you are interested in actually buying, you can often get a better deal buying sets of brushes in more than one size.  I'd also recommend checking prizes at Cheap Joe…

I received some Escoda Versatil travel brushes for Christmas and this is a line and wash I did to help myself get used to them.  Done in a Stillman & Birn Delta sketchbook.

Eternal Night in the Forest of Flame #Gellyrolls #SakuraOfAmerica #Pentalic

Image
With this drawing I just sort of let myself go for texture, enjoying the drama that the bright metallic and Moonlight Gellyroll pens create on black paper.  The colors seemed soooo dramatic that I had to come up with a grandiose title.

Moonlight Stallion #Gellyrolls #Pentalic #SakuraOfAmerica

Image
I decided to try some pointilism with my Gellyroll pens.  I think they work very well for this technique.

I rested often while working since the dot...dot...dot technique is a strain on the wrist.  I started around 01:00 in the afternoon and finished around 07:00.  If you took out the resting times, it was probably about 3 hours work.

The title 'Moonlight Stallion' is a bit of a play on words, since not only does the drawing look like a horse bathed in moonlight, I also use Moonlight Gellyroll pens.  Most of of it was drawn with a Classic White Gellyroll, though. Done in a Pentalic Traveler Black Paper, 8 x 6.

I didn't get around to drawing a Valentine's Day picture, but it's a day for dressing up in fine feathers, so I thought it would be a good time to share this peacock drawing.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

Into the Abyss #GellyRoll #ArtJournal #Stillman&Birn

Image
This is a mixed media piece done in my Stillman & Birn Delta journal.  I used Gellyroll gel ink pens over water-soluble Distress markers (the yellow and red earth tones) and Ultramarine Blue acrylic paint (a sample from Sennelier).

It all came out far more dramatic than I had expected!

Disaster Movie #StillmanAndBirn #Acrylic #ArtJournal

Image
This was a page in my Stillman & Birn Delta sketchbook that I had started using a GelliArts printing plate and stencils.  I didn't like it, and left it for the longest time.  Then the other day, I had some left over acrylic paint to use up.

I started applying it at random, but rapidly saw some skyscrapers appearing.  It wasn't long before I realized I was in the middle of a collapsing city.  Obviously, this was a scene from a disaster movie!

This is how my brain works.  All. The. Time.

Magpie - 52 Weeks of Watercolor Birds #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorBirds #ArtJournal

Image
This week's bird for the '52 Weeks of Watercolour Birds' was the magpie.

Confession time.  I screwed up.  First I made the bad choice to use up paint on my palette.  It was from the Qor Landscape set - Transparent Brown Oxide, Venetian Red, Indigo, Naples Yellow, Raw Umber and Sap Green.

It's such a muted set of colors.  I used it for the Goldfinch, but added Hansa Yellow Medium to brighten it up.  This time though I put too much paint down, and felt adding the yellow would just muddy things.

I also tried making these birds into white-throated magpies where the white is in quite different areas. But compositionally this just wasn't working.  I'd already painted the white areas for a common magpie, so I ... *cue horror music* ... used white acrylic paint to cover the Indigo.

I'm not totally unhappy with the results, but I'll definitely think twice about using this particular palette again.

I found my reference photo at the Morguefile archive.

Night in the Garden #Watercolor #KDAllegriWatercolor Class #Shizen

Image
We're still working on color theory in class.  I stuck with the cool primary triad of Aureolin Modern (Qor), Cobalt Blue (Daniel Smith) and Quinacridone Rose (M. Graham).

I've finished off the tube of Qor Aureolin Modern, and I'm going back to the M. Graham Azo Yellow (Aureolin).  I think it is a richer color, and price wise it's much cheaper because you get a bigger tube.

I used a Silver Black Velvet Round - size 16 brush on Shizen Hot Press watercolor paper.

Sandy River Study in Contour Drawing & Values #Watercolor #KDAllegriClass #PrimaryTriad

Image
You may have noticed that I'm really into painting birds at the moment.  This kind of thing happens to me a lot--I sort of obsess over something, and it's like my brain doesn't want to focus on anything else.

Our first day of class, we did contour line drawings and value studies of a photograph that the teacher, Kathy Delumpa Allegri, had taken along the Sandy River, and then did a quick painting.

But I had bird brain.  This should have been an easy little sketch for me to paint.  I've done lots of
paintings like this.  But no.  I struggled and did three versions before coming up with one that I'm even marginally happy with.

It's all in my head and just goes to show.  No matter how much you paint and how often you try not to judge your work, there are just times when you your brain and your muse don't get along, lol!

Journal52 2016 Week 5-Psychedlic #Journal52, #ArtJournaling #Gellyrolls

Image
I've always admired the brilliant splashes of color that you see in the oil paintings of Leonid Afremov.  And when I saw that the alternate week 5 prompt from Journal52 was Psychedelic, I thought I'd try to emulate the look using Gellyroll pens in my Pentalic Traveler Midnight Sketchbook.

Not too bad.  I wasn't sure how to handle the reflections in the wet pavement though so I'll have to work on that.
