Tease for upcoming giveaway

Be sure to visit my blog on Sunday 4/2/17.  I'll be hosting another giveaway for Exaclair, USA!

I'm reviewing the Artist Coloring Book: Birds  from Clairefontaine, a French paper manufacturer noted for producing quality paper that is fountain pen friendly, resistant to show-through or bleed-through. Six people will have a chance to win a copy of their own.

Be there or be square (isn't it about time for that phrase to become popular again?).

Handmade Stonehenge Aqua Watercolor journal #StonehengeAqua #Watercolor #LegionPaper

I have several watercolor journals, both bought and handmade, that I'm working in at the moment, and have absolutely no need for another one.

So I made another one anyway, lol.

I used several sheets of the Stonehenge Aqua 300 lb watercolor paper that I recently received from Legion Paper.  These sheets are heavy enough that they won't warp or buckle and don't need anything beneath them or stretching or taping down.  They'll hold up, not just to watercolor, but gluing and mixed media and almost anything. So this will be a great book for art journaling or plein air.

The cover painting was a quick study I did, mostly to see how well the Stonehenge Aqua Hot Press paper held up to masking fluid.  I used the masking fluid on the stones and splattered it in the sky, then let it set for two days.  Generally, the longer you let masking fluid set, the harder it is to remove.
My painting took about 15 minutes and I let it dry for about the same amount of time.  The masking fluid came off with no trouble at all.  I had one of those eraser-looking removers meant especially for this job, and it was a wet, rainy day.  It isn't just the paper that counts - temperature, humidity, and the brand of masking fluid all matter.  That's why a lot of people don't like using masking fluid.  I wouldn't hesitate to use it again on this paper, if I felt the timing was right.

I used a sticky-back sheet of canvas, glued to the watercolor paper, for my cover and painted it with Ultramarine Acyrlic.  Though I hadn't intended the painting for anything other than my test, I thought it had kind of a worn, old-timey look to it, and thought it would work for my journal, so I glued it down with PVA glue, and lined it with a black Sharpie and a white acrylic pen.  I think I'll do something more to tone down the brightness of the cover, but I'm not sure what I want to do yet.

52 Weeks of Watercolor Painting 2017 No.10 #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorPainting #StillmanAndBirn

February's flowers are Violets and Primroses and I think I got Pansies instead but I couldn't resist the color because I wanted to play some more with the new Daniel Smith Wisteria watercolor. You get an interesting shade of blue when you mix it with Phthalocyanine Blue.

I'm using a Stillman and Birn 9x12 Beta series wirebound sketchbook for all my '52 Weeks of Watercolor Paintings 2017'.

The brushes used were a ConnSilver Black Velvet 16 inch, Connoisseur White Mop Goat Hair Brush, #4 Round, and Dynasty Black Gold 3/8 Dagger. The Mijello Mission Gold watercolors used were Bamboo Green, Permanent Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue (PB15:3, which would be Phthalo Blue in any other brand) and Permanent Rose.  I also used Daniel Smith Wisteria.

Review: Spectrum Noir Illustrator Twin Tip Markers Sketching Set Of 12 #SpectrumNoir #IllustratorMarkers #AlcoholMarkers

Recently I won  a 12 set of  Spectrum Noir Illustrator Twin Tip Markers.  There are four 12 marker sets - Figure, Sketching, Seascape and Landscape. I won the Sketching set.  So, of course, I had to review them - that's just what I do!

General information about all Illustrator markers:

  • 216 colors
  • artist-grade
  • dual-tipped alcohol ink markers
  • super-fine nib for precision on one end
  • brush nib for versatility on other end
  • blendable and streak free coverage
  • Designed to help you understand the color wheel
  • Available in tonal sets for easy shading
  • Fast-drying ink
  • Non-toxic
  • Ergonomic barrel design for greater comfort
  • Refillable
  • Double-layered marker caps for extended time between refills
Besides the four 12-marker sets there are also eight sets of six markers - Basics, Hues, Tints, Tones, Neutrals, Portrait, Earth and Essentials. There are no color duplicates between sets.

How do they differ from the Original Spectrum Noir markers?
The Illustrator markers have a brush nib and a super-fine nib rather than the chisel and fine-tip that are on the original Spectrum Noir markers.  They are still a fiber-tip such as you would find with Copics or Sharpies.

The colors in the Illustrator sets are structured around the color wheel, and are named differently from the original Spectrum Noir markers. However,  these are not necessarily new colors - just renamed. In the chart on the packaging and the caps the colors look pastel.  They are actually rather intense but are transparent (see my chart below).

The caps on both ends are marked with the original numbering system, which indicates the relative darkness or lightness of the color - for instance TB3 would be darker than TB1.  The sketching set gives you a light and a mid-tone color of each of the primary (red, yellow, blue), and each of the secondary (green, orange, purple) colors. I suspect that holds true of all the 12 Marker sets.

The marker itself is six-sided, which means it won't roll off of a table, but it can sometimes be frustrating trying to get the cap back on.  You have to line it up just so before it will snap into place.

The marker is a grayish-white in color with color-coded caps. On one of the side, the brand name and identification of the tip ends are shown in a darker gray.

The Illustrator 12 Marker Sketching set colors are daffodil, sunshine, yellow green, salad, pearl blue, denim, lilac, hydrangea, baby pink, fruit pink, pale tan and apricot.

The colors are beautiful (at least, I find them so).  The lilac and hydrangea are slightly two-toned with pinkish highlights creating an aura around the colored area.  The effect decreases somewhat as the ink dries, and is more apparent on some paper than others.

As with most paint and ink mediums there is a color shift.  That means that when the ink dries it changes - in this case the color become slightly less vibrant and lighter.

I made this chart, layering each color to show the value range of each color from light to dark.
These are alcohol markers which means the ink is wet and will soak through to the back of most papers unless they are very heavy or specially treated.  The color on the back is usually much less bright and often more pastel.  In some areas color may not soak through.  It depends on the paper and how many layers of ink you apply in different areas.

Most alcohol markers have a smell.  I didn't notice any with these markers, but a more sensitive nose than mine might.

One of the claims made about these markers is that they are good for streak-free coloring, and I'd like to put in my two cents about that.  The flow of ink on these is very strong which means the ink stays wet (but doesn't smear) for a while, but that varies with the paper you are using.  Streaking usually occurs when you layer wet ink over dry ink.  Every ink will streak under the right circumstances but some more than others.

So that means you will get streaks if you layer -- but creating streaks in a controlled manner is called shading! You let a layer dry, then add more color where you want shading and you get darker color.

Since the ink flow of these markers is strong, unwanted streaking shouldn't be a problem - unless you are using paper that causes the ink to dry too fast for the speed in which you are coloring.

I wasn't impressed with the packaging.  The set comes in a box with a thin plastic shell that won't hold up for long, and because of the six sided markers you have to get to line them up just so or they won't all fit.  I like to keep my sets in the original box because it is easier to find the right colors later, but that won't be possible in this case.  That's a minor flaw though, and won't be an issue for many.

Performance
For my first example, I used the markers on hot press watercolor paper, which is fairly smooth but has a little tooth.  I was interested in seeing how dark I could get my values, and was pleased with the range I got by layering different colors over one another.

The ink dried fairly quickly, but I had no trouble with streaks except where I wanted them for shading and detail.

I used a permanent ink pen to add the lines after coloring.

For the second and third example, I did what I call a Bleedthrumanade.  I used to do these a lot and it was fun to revisit the technique.  As I mentioned above, alcohol ink bleeds (soaks) through the page.
Making fun of the old saw 'If life hands you lemons, make lemonade', I say 'If coloring hands you bleed-thru make bleedthrumanade.'  I know, it's a poor joke, but it's fun to do.  If you're interested in more detail, you can find a tutorial here.

I did these two drawings on an ivory-colored fountain-pen friendly paper.  It's very smooth and thin, but meant to work with wet ink.  On this paper, the Illustrator colors are not quite as bright and the two-tone effect with the lilac marker wasn't as noticeable.  (Note: the paper is a dot-grid, so if you notice little dots here and there - that's the paper, not the markers)

Since this was an unplanned abstract, I didn't layer for shading, using my permanent ink pen for that later. I had no problem with unwanted streaking and got a nice even layer of color.  I used a white acrylic pen to add the highlights.

Once I was happy with the front of the page, I turned it over and did a second drawing on the back.  If you want more pastel colors with this set, this is the way to get them!

Overall
The 12 colors in the Spectrum Noir Illustrator Twin Tip Markers Sketching Set are vibrant and very transparent.  It is easy to build up a range of values by layering different colors.  Though they are alcohol ink markers there is little to no scent.  The ink does bleed through to the back of untreated paper, as all alcohol ink tends to do.  The markers have six sides so they won't roll off the table, but you do have to line up the caps to snap them back on.

The markers have a brush nib and a super-fine nib and are refillable.  Combined with the bright and transparent colors these are definitely artist quality.

I'm personally very happy with the markers, though I was disappointed with the packaging.  I won this set, but I will be buying more.

Disclaimer
I won this Sketching set of 12 Illustrator Twin Tip Markers from Spectrum Noir in a giveaway.  I was not asked to review the set, and did so because I felt my readers would be interested.  I'm excited by the fact I won them, but have tried not to let it influence me.  Everything here is my honest opinion.

Evening Garden Party #StonehengeAqua #Watercolor #LegionPaper

Totally not sure about this painting.  Not sure what I wanted to achieve - something vaguely Gauguin-ish.  Not sure if it worked.

I didn't fail.  The painting does evoke some feeling of satisfaction, though it doesn't feel quite right.  Areas were getting overworked, so I stopped and will just consider this an exploration of possibilities.

Easter Card Early #Easter #LegionPaper #EasterBunny

Every year I plan to make an Easter card for my mother and every year I put it off until it is too late.  This year I got ahead of the game and Voilà! I actually did a card.

It doesn't show very well in the scan, but the card is 3D.  I drew my picture on Stonehenge Aqua hot press press with my electronic Cuttlelola dotspen. then colored it with colored pencils, which worked nicely on that paper.

I cut the drawing out, separating the bunny and his egg from the nest with the Happy Easter greeting and glued tabs in the back to make each stand out from the card, and the nest a little further out than the bunny.  I had a card that I had previously colored blue, planning to use it for something in the future, and I glued the tabs to this card.

Quick Studies in Watercolor #Watercolor #DanielSmith #WetInWet

For the last class of winter watercolor class, we just played with the paint.  We did several 5 - 15 minute paintings, playing with the wet-in-wet technique.

Most of what I did wasn't worth posting.  I didn't use any reference photos, just pulled something from my head. It's funny.  I draw this way all the time, but almost never do it when I'm painting. When drawing, I often use color, and often use a brush pen, but to do the same thing with watercolor or acrylic is much more difficult for me.  Probably because I usually have something specific in mind before I start to paint, whereas I usually just start drawing and then decide what it should be.  Ain't the human brain funny?

And what is that creature in the third painting? I think he might be a fox by way of a kangaroo, lol!

52 Weeks of Watercolor Painting 2017 No. 9 #Watercolor #52WeeksOfWatercolorPainting #StillmanAndBirn

I've got to get a better workspace for my painting.  I managed to smear this one while reaching to get something.  I'm always spilling or smearing something.  It's the workspace, I tell you - not that I'm a klutz.

Fortunately, I was able to smooth out the smear so it looks like I was trying to show streaks of light.  No mistakes, only opportunities!

A bit late in the game, I decided 2017 will be all about flowers, and that I'll paint the flower(s) of the month (U.S. style).  Since I missed January and February, I'm splitting March, painting January's Snowdrop, February's Primrose, and then two weeks of March's Daffodils.

Really working the negative painting technique and once again surprised at how quickly I can get deep, dark values with Mission Gold paints.

I'm using a Stillman and Birn 9x12 Beta series wirebound sketchbook for all my '52 Weeks of Watercolor Paintings 2017'.

Mini Review: Pigma Micron PN Pens #Sakura #Micron #Zentangle

When I saw that Sakura had come out with a new version of the Pigma Micron I had to try it out.  I immediately purchased the 'Sakura Pigma Micron PN, Assorted Colors, 8PC Set'.

So what is different about this set as opposed to the fiber tipped Pigma Micron that we all love and are used to?  The ink is still quick drying, waterproof, fade resistant, archival and pH neutral according to the Sakura website.  I'll be testing that out over the next few weeks.

The difference is in the nib.  It's a hard plastic that is more durable than the fiber tip.  I have used other brand pens with similar nibs, but none of them had the Pigma Micron ink, so I'm excited to see how these hold up.

All the pens in this set have the same size nib.  Info on the site says that you can get a fine or medium line width (0.4mm to 0.5mm) by varying the pressure.  I found that I could vary the line size, but haven't quite learned how to do it on demand yet.

The 8 piece set has pens in black, red, blue/black, blue, sepia, rose, burgundy and purple.

Many people who are into Zentangle often comment that they like the 'scritch' sound that the pen makes as it moves across the paper.  I did my drawing on a smoother paper (Clairefontaine dot grid) than the official Zentangle tile but got plenty of scritch.  I suspect this will please some and others not so much.

I think the coverage is a bit more solid than you get with the traditional fiber tip, but that could have as much to do with tip size as with the new nib.

The fiber-tipped microns will still be a staple in my art supplies - at least until this plastic nibs can give me a .005 line - but I'll also have the PN pens for when I want bolder, faster coverage.
